Karen Tortora-Lee’s Question
That’s some title. How did you come up with it – and what does it mean?
Bill: It’s based on the true story of a man who was trapped in his car for five days. He survived for five days by eating condiment packets.
Diánna Martin’s Question
If you were going to invite five people, anyone from past and present, to see your FRIGID show – who would you invite and why?
Bill: There are a ton of people I admire, but if the first to leap to mind are:
- Playwright Mary Jo Pehl (and her husband), because she hasn’t seen our production yet, and they’ve been hugely supportive
- Anyone from the crew at Kickstarter, who helped us fund the production
- Peter Brook, a huge influence on me through his books, because though I would probably live in mortal fear, I’d love to know what he thought
- H. J. Heinz, for obvious reasons
Antonio Minino’s Question
What is the biggest sacrifice you’ve ever made for your Art and was it worth it?
Bill: In the first production I ever produced, we did such a terrible job of advertising that we actually bought tickets on a credit card so that we’d have an audience for our actors. And yes, it was worth it.
Geoffrey Paddy Johnson’s Question
Was there any unexpected discovery made during the development of this production and, if so, can you share it?
Bill: The show is still as funny as I remember thinking it would be when I read the script, but it’s a much darker comedy than I thought. You’re watching a man fight off starvation by eating ketchup, and the comedy comes from recognizing how you would probably act in that situation. You’re laughing, and wincing, at yourself.
Michelle Augello-Page’s Question
What do you hope the audience receives from the experience of seeing this show?
Bill: Entertainment, first and foremost. Everything else is just icing.
Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament of DEAAAAATH
THM Bonus Question – We’re serious this year!
In the THM virtual Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament of DEAAAAATH which FRIGID Show do you take on? And what do you throw?
Bill: Rock. Always throw rock. That way if someone throws paper you can punch them and say, “oh, I’m sorry, I thought paper stopped rock.”
And who do you challenge?
Bill: Let’s go up against Afternoon Tea with Jane Austen. She sounds scrappy!
Well, Bill — ROCK is very popular this season! With two shows who challenged EVERYONE with ROCK (Love in the Time of Chlamydia and Initium/Finis) that gives you TWO automatic ties. And your official opponent, Afternoon Tea with Jane Austen also threw ROCK. So … you come out even on all fronts narrowly escaping DEAAAAATH – saved not by Condiments this time but by ROCK. Well played, Bill. Well played.
Thanks Man Saved By Condiments! for participating in The Happiest Medium’s FRIGID New York Festival 2012 Q&A. And for playing our game! You’re officially ROCK in any and all challenges. You may win again, you may not – who knows! This is how it works in the crazy world of the Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament of DEAAAAATH!
